Quick Hits: Cleary Re-signs; Renney To Leave Wings?

Red Wings News

Detroit Red Wings sign forward Daniel Cleary to a one-year contract | MLive.com
First of all, no, I do not think that the Wings should have re-signed Cleary, I think this was a very bad decision. That said, it is not the end of the world. Sure, it derails Jurco’s ascension into the team, yet, he is still young, and it is not like him missing 20-30 games is going to ruin his career trajectory. As for Mantha, I do not think there was any realistic chance of him making the roster out of the gate. My concern is what this move psychologically represents, rather than what it actually does. Re-signing an old, injury-prone player to a hefty contract which in essence prevents one of your top prospects from playing on your team is more two steps backward than it is one step forward.

Red Wings’ odds of winning Stanley Cup remain the same despite lack of moves in free agency | MLive.com
The Wings have not gained anything this offseason, but, they really have not lost anything either. If they are relatively healthy next season, they will probably be a better team than they were last season.

Another Wings’ assistant coach may be leaving town. Is this when Draper or another one of the Wings’ former players finally get their shot at being an assistant coach?

Ryan O’Reilly, Avalanche, done negotiating extension, headed for arbitration (Report) | Puck Daddy – Yahoo Sports

O’Rielly probably cannot wait until his commitment to the Avalanche is over. This raises an interesting question; should players be allowed to hit free agency earlier? Essentially, do away with restricted free agency all together. This would avoid complicated situations like this one. I do not really have an opinion on this matter, but, it’s an interesting avenue to consider.
