Quick Hits: Tatar Re-Signs, All Is Well

Red Wings News

Detroit Red Wings, Tomas Tatar agree to 3-year deal | Detroit Free Press
We all knew that Tatar was going to eventually re-sign, but did anyone else breathe a sigh of relief when you heard the news? Considering all of the KHL rumors of past years, and questions about his commitment to the Wings, this deal certainly put to rest any doubts that you had about Tatar.

Tomas Tatar ‘an important guy going forward’ for Red Wings after signing contract extension | MLive.com
Nyquist may have a slightly higher offensive upside, but Tatar is probably the most well rounded player of the two. He can play on a first-line and on a third-line and still be effective, and he plays with an edge, something that the Wings’ have needed at times.

Ticker: Who would when a vote of Detroit’s least popular athlete? | Detroit Free Press
This isn’t an easy question. There really is not one clear answer. At least not on the Red Wings. If I had to pick one Detroit athlete, Jose Valverde would probably be my choice.

Leafs continue to add vets, sign Winnik to one-year, $1.3M deal | ProHockeyTalk
Great signing by the Leafs. He is not a superstar by any means, but he can consistently score 25+ points, and comes in at a cheap rate.

You can cross Daniel Winnik off of this list now. Out of the remaining four players, Penner and Del Zotto bring the most upside. Peter Mueller had two very good seasons in the NHL a few years ago, but has since not done much of significance, in part due to a series of concussions.

How long until John Tortorella is back behind an NHL bench? | Puck Daddy
He probably will, and definitively should, take some time off from the NHL. That said, Torts will coach in the NHL again.

How Mike Vernon set the stage for Patrick Roy’s trade from Montreal – SBNation.com
This was very interesting. I knew that the Wings’ played Vernon in that game against Montreal, but no one knew this.

Hockey Canada overhauls U17 men’s program – Sportsnet.ca
You have to admit, the Canadians do a good job with developing players.

‘Hawks prospect Shalunov signs two-year KHL deal | ProHockeyTalk
The Blackhawks drafted Maxim Shalunov in the 4th round of the 2011 draft. He spent the majority of last season with the Toledo Walleye, scoring 34 points in 43 games.

97 years of NHL expansion in one simple map – SBNation.com

This is a great map. I love how in the ’90s all these teams in the South and Midwest begin to pop up.
