Quick Hits: A Spark to the Power Play

  • Using Jiri Hudler as a spark? In 2010-2011, you’d have laughed at me. Now, it doesn’t seem so far off. Hudler has a point in both games this season and has looked like one of our best players. Babcock is hoping to capitalize on Hudler’s play by using him to improve our power play. [The Detroit News]
  • Speaking of players playing better than they were supposed to, it’s been two nights since we had a game and Jakub Kindl still leads the league in +/- with Jonathan Ericsson tied for second. [Yahoo! Sports]
  • Khan writes that having two elite centers, both capable of playing any position on the ice, really opens up options for the Wings. As he points out, only one of our lines has not been jumbled yet – Two Kids and a Goat 3.0, also known as our third line of Abdelkdaer-Helm-Bertuzzi. Everything else seems to be fair game in Babcock’s world, and I suspect he will tweak lines on-the-go, as needed, every game this season. [MLive]
  • This is an odd suggestion: Tom Wilson, the man Ilitch stole away from the Pistons, presumably to get a new arena built for the Wings, suggests that hockey provides more of an economic boost than football and baseball. [MLive]
  • Well, that sure didn’t take long. In less than a week, the Wings jumped from #8 in ESPN’s Power Rankings (and similar positions everywhere else) to #1. [ESPN]
  • You have to assume Marc Methot of the Blue Jackets will be getting a good talking-to by Brendan Shanahan sometime today. His hit on one of the league’s elite, Henrik Sedin, was both dirty and painful looking, and quite a few are already calling for his head. [Puck Daddy]
  • Fantasy Alert: If you have Mattias Ohlund, time to dump him. He’s out for at least two months due to surgery on both knees today. [Raw Charge]
  • I have to give it to Craig Rivet – he wants to play, no matter where. Rivet, who I had thought retired this summer, signed with the Elmira Jackals of the ECHL yesterday to keep his career going. The man was the captain of an NHL team for the last three seasons, and could not find a single job in the NHL, so he went to a minor league. Dedication like that doesn’t go unnoticed. [Puck Daddy]
  • Silver Seven thinks it’s time for Senators fans to get over Dany Heatley. He’s now playing his third season since leaving the team and you’re still not over him? He’s like your first girlfriend in High School that broke up with you and ended your life. [Silver Seven]
  • Are the Wings the top rivals of the Ducks? Anaheim Calling seems to think so. [Anaheim Calling]
  • Presumably taking inspiration from the Boston Bruins fans who painted the office of their new Montreal-native boss black and gold, Toronto fans gave a Canadiens-fan a huge surprise for when he comes back from vacation. [Pension Plan Puppets]
  • Die by the Blade seems to be taking the Wings approach to looking at Jason Pominville being named captain. Before Lidstrom was named captain, many wondered if it might be Henrik Zetterberg to attempt to mirror what we did with Yzerman. DBTB believes the Sabres made the correct choice in going with an experienced leader over their top young talent and that not naming Thomas Vanek or Derek Roy captain is great for the team in the long run. [Die by the Blade]

Discussion of the Day: Who is the Wings biggest rival?  Chicago?  San Jose?  Pittsburgh?  Someone else?
