Quick Hits: Can Weiss Be A Productive Player For The Wings?

Red Wings News

Detroit Red Wings’ Stephen Weiss has a lot to prove going into 2014-15 | Detroit Free Press
If he is healthy, I think that Weiss can be a productive player for the Wings. He is a skilled center, and has proven in the past that he can produce. I would not call this a make-or-break year for Weiss, but, he certainly needs to prove that he can still play or he may be on his way out of Detroit.

Detroit, state should’ve challenged Wings arena plan | Crain’s Detroit Business
This depends on whose side you are on. Interesting, although I am not sure if I agree as a Wings’ fan, but, as an Econ major I can see what the author is trying to get across.

Detroit Red Wings’ Brendan Smith needs to make good on value | Detroit Free Press
Smith’s play last season, while still questionable, was a huge improvement over 2012-2013. Hopefully, he will continue to grow and develop as top-4 defenseman for the Wings.

Carol Vadnais passed away yesterday after losing a battle with cancer. He played the majority of his career with the Bruins and Rangers, winning a Cup with the Bruins in 1972. He also won a Cup with the Canadiens in 1968, his second season in the NHL.

Columnist: Schultz deal might complicate Avs’ talks with RFA Barrie | ProHockeyTalk
The Oilers re-signed Justin Schultz a few days ago, on a one-year deal worth $3.657 million. The Avalanche had hoped to re-sign Tyson Barrie, who is a very comparable player to Schultz, for about $1 million less per season. That will most likely not happen now.

Ryan Johansen not expected at Blue Jackets camp due to contract impasse | Puck Daddy
I hope that this does not turn out to be like the Subban situation. Could you imagine Johansen winning the Hart or Art Ross in the next few years?

Re-training the Red Dragon for the 2018 Winter Olympics | The Hockey News
The 2018 Winter Olympics are in South Korea, giving the Chinese team extra incentive to do well in the tournament. I wonder what Don Cherry’s reaction would be if the Chinese women’s team could beat Canada’s equivalent in the final of the tournament?

Scioscia wants MLB to adopt NHL-inspired roster expansion rules | ProHockeyTalk
He wants the MLB to adopt a policy similar to the NHL’s post-trade deadline, pre-postseason player call-up policy. He thinks it could create greater parity in the MLB.

Cherry says Quebec City deserves next NHL team – Sportsnet.ca
I fully agree with Cherry on this. Outside of Seattle, no other city in Canada or the U.S. deserves a hockey team more than Quebec City. It may not be the best possible financial investment for the NHL, but from a hockey perspective, few places rival it.

EA Sports under fire for sexist selfies in NHL 15 | Puck Daddy – Yahoo Sports
For a company which should have a goal of expanding its consumer base, this is the worst thing to do.

Ducks likely to try Dany Heatley on line with Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry – CBSSports.com

Maybe Heatley can re-gain his scoring touch with the Ducks. He does have two 50-goal seasons in him, although they were a long time ago. Who knows? Maybe a change of scenery and linemates is all Heatley needed.
