Quick Hits: Datsyuk, Malkin, And Ovechkin KHL Rumors

Red Wings News

Detroit Red Wings’ Pavel Datsyuk won’t rule out playing for KHL one day | Detroit Free Press
Datsyuk is currently under contract for three more season’s with the Wings. When his current deal is over, he will be 38. At that point, he may sign a couple of one-year deals, similar to Lidström, or he may choose to head back to Russia. Either way, the Wings should not be too worried. At that point, we should have a group of players that should be able to emulate his production.

Red Wings’ Ken Holland stands by plan amid criticism over lack of free-agent signings | The Detroit News
Honestly, there is no way that we can tell whether Holland is right or wrong at the moment. This is the type of debate that will finally have a conclusion in five to ten years. In the meantime, we just have to hope for the best.

Ask Ansar: Some believe Red Wings should deal young talent for a star player in an effort to win now | MLive.com
Questions were asked, and Ansar answered.

By The Numbers: Drew Miller – Detroit Red Wings
Drew Miller played all 82 regular season games last season. I have a hard time seeing him replicating that this season. The competition for the bottom-6 positions may push him out of the starting lineup.

Pressure turning up on Jimmy Howard | Detroit Free Press
For now, Howard is clearly our best goaltender, and our obvious starter. But, as Mrazek continues to develop, Howard will have to show that he is still improving as well. This is far from a make-or-break season for Howard. But, if he fails to carry the Wings when we need him to, Babcock may be looking at Mrazek a bit more in 2015-2016.

It’s still okay for an NHL team to draft goaltenders – Raw Charge
Goaltenders generally speaking take a longer time to develop than defenseman and forwards. Does this mean that they shouldn’t be drafted? No. But, it does mean that teams shouldn’t just draft a goaltender for the purpose of drafting one. To me, I would always avoid picking a goaltender in the top-3 rounds, unless you feel like the player is a steal.

THN’s 2014-15 NHL season preview: Buffalo Sabres | The Hockey News
I do not think that the Sabres will be as bad as people expect them to be. They will be one of the bottom-three teams in the NHL, but, I have a feeling that McDavid and Eichel will have to be looking for homes in different cities.

Top 10 NHL Tweets of the Month: August – Sportsnet.ca
I love how Datsyuk was able to throw a dig at Bissonnette while at the same time subtly promoting his products. Datsyuk the magician to Datsyuk the businessman.

NHL’s hardest working defensemen in 2013-14 | ProHockeyTalk
Once again, no Wings’ on the hardest working list. Erik Karlsson was included on the list, maybe we should trade for him?

NHL rumors: KHL president hints at return to Russia for Ovechkin, Malkin – CBSSports.com
In a few years, I would not be surprised if Ovechkin and Malkin leave for the KHL. If they can receive comparable or greater salaries in the KHL, then this could occur sooner than expected. But, I have a hard time seeing them leaving within the next year, as the KHL President is suggesting.
