Quick Hits: Decisions to Make for Augustine

Red Wings Rumblings

Another loss, and another step closer to being eliminated from playoff contention. Detroit is 3-7-0 in their last 10 games. Despite a three-goal rally in the third period, Ottawa took down the Wings 4-3 a Little Caesars Arena last night. Tough to win games when you don’t score in the first two period and your goaltending/defense isn’t good enough to keep it close. I don’t think we need deep analysis at this point with 10 games left in the regular season. The Red Wings have gone flat at the worst possible time. Still not out of the race, but their chances are only getting more slim. Next chance to get “back on track” is tomorrow night against Boston at home. If they can’t manage win against a very-beatable Bruins team, that’s probably it… Boston is currently on a seven-game losing streak.

Prospect Check In

Lots of College Hockey action yesterday! Western Michigan University is moving on after beating Minnesota State in double OT, but the big shocker of the day was Michigan State blowing it against Cornell. That means Trey Augustine’s season is done and there could be some news on his status as a pro hockey player soon. MSU coach Adam Nightingale said it’s a 50/50 chance Augustine will go pro. I’m guessing the South Lyon native will choose to sign his ELC with Detroit. He’s played at the highest level in College Hockey and really has nothing left to prove other than maybe going on another run to a National Championship next season.

Still really stinks that the Spartans’ season ended that way, and not too far away from home no less — the game was played in Toledo at Huntington Center.

Speaking of the Huntington Center, it’s got a new goal horn and boy is it LOUD! That’s because it’s the old horn from the S.S. Boyer, a ship built in 1911 that was at the time the largest bulk freighter on the Great Lakes. Really cool story about it from the Toledo Blade, I suggest reading it if you’re a fan of hockey and history.

Over in Sweden, Axel Sandin Pellikka and Michael Bransegg-Nygard’s SHL team won against and now has a 3-1 series lead. MBN played one hell of a game yesterday — a goal and an assist with 5 SOG and 13:41 TOI. Check out his goal here, we forget that this kid has a REAL shot in his arsenal. Seems like Skelleftea is poised to move onto the next round, meaning ASP and MBN won’t be making the jump to North America anytime soon.

Happy Friday, friends. Enjoy the day and your weekend.
