Quick Hits: DeKeyser Update; No More “24/7”

Red Wings News

Red Wings’ Danny DeKeyser still optimistic deal can be done before training camp | MLive.com
I wonder what the issue is that is keeping the talks from progressing. I am assuming that its probably the term of the contract. DeKeyser could be hoping for a short-term deal, hoping that he will play even better and earn an even bigger contract, or, he could be hoping for a long-term deal, which the Wings may be reluctant to give him.

Mitch Callahan hopes to land spot on Red Wings with hard work, abrasiveness, defensive awareness | MLive.com
In the comment section of yesterday’s Quick Hits, J.J. raised the possibility of Callahan having a chance of making the Wings’ roster if Alfredsson does not choose to play another season. Without Alfie, the Wings’ have 13 forwards on their roster. This leaves space for Tomas Jurco to start the season with the Wings. But, Holland and Babcock may decide to give Callahan or Ferraro a chance instead, as both of those players have to clear waivers, and, they are both entering make-it-or-break-it seasons with the Wings’ organization.

Red Wings prospects: Tyler Bertuzzi proving critics wrong heading into final junior season | MLive.com

When the Wings’ drafted Bertuzzi in 2013, I was a little skeptical as to why they drafted him over some of the other players who were available in the second round. While he will need to do a lot more to prove to us fans that he was worth the pick, his improvements last season were a pleasant sight.

Report: NHL will announce HBO replacement on Sept. 23 | ProHockeyTalk
Personally, I enjoy behind-the-scenes style shows. They give you insight into the daily routines of players which you usually do not hear about. While the NHL’s HBO replacement may not equal the production of “24/7”, any show that delves deeper into the workings of hockey players is, to me at least, very enjoyable.

NHL rule changes for 2014-15: More trapezoid, no spin-o-rama, please stop diving – SBNation.com
The NHL is taking much needed action against diving. The league will fine players for each incident, and, for every incident incurred, the amount of the fine for the player will increase. From a player’s fourth incident onwards, coaches will also be fined. If only FIFA would adopt a similar policy.

Flyers not counting Timonen out for next season | ProHockeyTalk

Many, including myself, assumed that Timonen’s season, in addition to potentially his career, was over due to the blood clot issues that he has suffered. I doubt that the 39-year-old returns, but, the Flyers are not ruling anything out.
