Quick Hits: The Expectations Edition

In Red Wings Land

Why the Detroit Red Wings could beat bookmakers’ low expectations | Freep

The Westgate Las Vegas Superbook has the over/under on the Wings’ point total for next season at 76.5. The Senators have the lowest total at 68.5, the only team below 70 points. Steve Yzerman’s former employer, the Tampa Bay Lightning, top out at 108.5. The Lightning are favored by 11/10 odds to win the Atlantic Division. The Wings’ odds are 200/1, ahead only of Ottawa at 500/1.

As for a shot at the 2020 Stanley Cup, the Wings are grouped with Columbus, Minnesota, Anaheim and Los Angeles at 100/1 odds, ahead only of the Senators’ 500/1 odds.

The Red Wings have put up point totals of 79, 73 and 74 over the last three seasons, so I think 76.5 is a pretty reasonable over/under for the upcoming year. Quite frankly, I’m not too concerned if they beat the low expectations or not. If the team puts up 73 or 74 points again, but there is significant progress from the young core, then I’ll be happy.

I just want to see guys like Filip Zadina and Filip Hronek have great years and the continued progression from Dylan Larkin & co. Steve Yzerman has preached patience and he’s right. Plus, we’ll be in the running for the top pick in the 2020 NHL Draft and the chance the select Alexis Lafrenière.
