Grading Steve Yzerman’s first draft as Detroit Red Wings general manager | Freep
Yzerman did something unexpected in his first major assignment since taking control of the Wings as general manager. How his picks will fare won’t be known, as he noted, by next year, maybe not for five years. For the weekend, he gets a B-plus.
It’s a passing grade for Steve Yzerman and the Red Wings. I’ve been on the Seider train all along and I dig some of the late picks too. I think my favorite might be Albin Grewe. How can you not love a player who has the nickname T-Rex?

2018 farm system ranking: No. 7
2018 draft grade: A-minus
2019 Draft Grade: B
Detroit had an interesting draft. They got talent but the debate over the next few years will be, did they get the right talent. I like Moritz Seider a lot, just not at No. 6. I like Antti Tuomisto, just not at No. 35. For what it’s worth, Detroit wasn’t the only team high on both those players, even if it wasn’t a consensus opinion.
Looks like “B” is the popular pick for the Wings.

He was also a draft-combine favourite. Stylish and with a fun personality, Red Wings fans will find Seider very easy to cheer for — he may even become a fan favourite one day.
German D Moritz Seider, who’s apparently a big fashion guy, said he wasn’t sure what to pack for NHL combine. Debated full suits but opted for less formal wear. Some teams commented on business casual/sneakers look. “I’m famous for that, maybe,” he joked. Kid’s got a personality.
