Detroit Red Wings Rumors: Wings Out on Christian Ehrhoff Due to Contract Demands | DSS
The Wings are unwilling to give Ehrhoff a five-year deal, which is what he is asking for. The difference between Ehrhoff and Niskanen in this situation is that Niskanen is four years younger.

Red Wings plan on signing goalie Tom McCollum to one-year contract to remain in Grand Rapids | MLive.com

Ranking the top 40 NHL free agents for 2014 - SBNation.com
Interesting list. They have Stralman ranked as the top defenseman available. I cannot say that I agree with that.

Report: Stastny, Avalanche can’t complete a deal | ProHockeyTalk
Not a huge surprise here. Stastny will probably be the most sought after free agent today, which means that he will receive a ridiculous contract. He made $6.6 million on average on his last deal, I would not be shocked if he receives a pay raise.

And...the Canadiens just made one of the best trades of the offseason.

NHL rumors: Ryan Miller 'being wooed' by Canucks in Vancouver - CBSSports.com
If the Canucks want to be a rebuilding team, I would advise against signing Miller. Assuming that they want a high draft pick next season, having one of the best netminders in the world on your team certainly does not aid that cause.

Why do NHL teams give goalies long, stupid contracts? - SBNation.com
Teams tend to overreact to having a good goaltender, so they overpay to keep him.

Report: Lecavalier-to-Nashville deal falls through | ProHockeyTalk

Nashville has been snubbed by both Jason Spezza and Vinny Lecavalier. Is it reasonable to believe that Paul Stastny will join those two?

NHL free agency: 8 things to know | USA Today
The Sabres are $20 million under the salary cap floor at the moment. That is incredibly low.

Relive Sam Gagner’s remarkable Tampa Bay Lightning career in video tribute | Puck Daddy - Yahoo Sports
For Gagner, it was not the quantity of hours that he spent with the Lighting, it was the quality of them that truly mattered.

Buyer beware with Matt Niskanen, a top NHL free agent defenseman - SBNation.com
Niskanen is a very good defenseman. He is young, and shoots right-handed. From a player perspective, I have no problem with the Wings pursuing him. My problem is the massive contract that he will receive. Niskanen is almost certain to receive a seven-year deal, and a cap hit north of $5 million. The salary I am fine with, it's the term that I cannot stomach.
