Quick Hits: Free Agency Rumors & Rumblings

Red Wings News

Detroit Red Wings prospect Adam Almquist headed to Russia | Detroit Free Press
Considering that he is not one of the top three defensive prospects that we have right now, I am totally fine with him doing this. Since we retain his rights, there is not much for us to lose here. If he absolutely tears up the KHL we can offer him a decent contract to play in the NHL, and if he turns out to be not much, well then we have one less contract counting against our 50 contract limit.

Detroit Red Wings Rumors: Wings ‘Keenly Interested’ in Jerome Iginla, According to TSN Report | DSS
I’ve said it before, if Alfredsson retires, I would not mind the Wings signing Iginla.

Red Wings Firsts: Tomas Jurco – Detroit Red Wings
Reminiscing back to Jurco’s first goal.

Detroit Red Wings’ Tyler Bertuzzi, Zach Nastasiuk picked for Canada’s national team camp | Detroit Free Press | freep.com

Bertuzzi and Nastasiuk were invited to Canada’s national junior team summer evaluation camp.

NHL News

Marian Gaborik signs 7-year, cap friendly deal with champion Kings | Puck Daddy – Yahoo Sports
I am sure that all Leafs fans are loving the fact that Gaborik has a lower cap hit than Clarkson.

Report: At least eight teams are interested in Dan Boyle | ProHockeyTalk
The Wings appear to be “serious” contenders for Boyle.

Why nobody cares about the NHL Draft – SBNation.com
The reason why the NHL Draft is not nearly as popular or widely followed as the NFL or NBA draft is due to the long time it takes for players to develop. If all the players in the first round would be playing for your team next season, there would certainly be a lot more buzz about these prospects than what currently exists. For the NHL, there is no way to fix this, this is simply how the sport is set up.

Lightning use second compliance buyout on Ryan Malone – CBSSports.com
No surprise here. The charges of DUI and cocaine possession certainly packed Malone’s bags for him.

Report: Canucks contact Ryan Miller, Bolland – Sportsnet.ca
The Canucks should be a rebuilding team. They need to restructure their core group of players, and while Miller is a phenomenal goaltender, finding someone younger may be a more fitting option.

Report: Richards, Niskanen among targets for ‘aggressive’ Isles | ProHockeyTalk
The Islanders have a strong group of players. All they really need are a few above average players, and this team could easily be playoff bound.

Mike Johnston is next head coach of Pittsburgh Penguins | Puck Daddy – Yahoo Sports

While Johnston may not be a flashy hire, he has a lot of experience under his belt, which may just be what the Penguins need.

How the World Cup Affects American Hockey | The Hockey Writers
I have one problem with this article, it called soccer a “niche” sport. Yeah, I totally disagree with that. It is the least “niche” sport of any sport in the entire world.

Ryan Callahan signs 6-year, $34.8 million contract extension – SBNation.com
I like Callahan. He is a team leader and a solid player, but is he worth this contract? He is 29-years old, which makes a 6-year deal reasonable, but the contract does have a $5.8 million cap hit. This is not nearly as bad as the Clarkson deal, but on the same note, it is not nearly as good as the Gaborik contract.

NHL rumors: Paul Stastny to ‘see what’s out there,’ offer Avs chance – CBSSports.com
If the Wings did not already have Weiss/Helm/Sheahan, I would not mind Stastny. But the contract that he will earn in free agency will be outrageous.

Blue Jackets trade defenceman Nikita Nikitin to Oilers for fifth-round draft pick – The Hockey News
Nikitin scored two goals and 15 points in 66 games for the Blue Jackets last season.

Report: Leafs president speaks with Brodeur | ProHockeyTalk
From Brodeur’s point of view, going to Toronto is not a bad option. Assuming that Reimer is moved, he only has Bernier ahead of him in the depth chart. And while Bernier will receive the majority of starts, Marty will most likely receive more playing time with the Leafs than he would with most other teams.
