Red Wings News

Howe family feels blessed with Gordie turning 87 | USA Today
Gordie Howe has made a remarkable recovery since suffering a string of strokes this past fall. Happy Birthday Gordie!

Detroit Red Wings face serious headache in goal | Puck Daddy
Jimmy Howard is our starter and will remain our starter until Petr Mrazek shows that he can be a starter on a consistent basis, which despite some solid performances, has not been the case so far this season.

5 things to watch: Red Wings could face pair of surprising goaltenders on tremendous runs | MLive.com
It may be the week of the goaltender this week for the Wings. Jimmy Howard versus Petr Mrazek and the Wings play against Andrew Hammond’s Senators and Devan Dubnyk’s Wild.

As season winds down, Detroit Red Wings know they need a boost | Detroit Free Press
A couple of wins is all I ask for as we near the playoffs. Consistent play with consistent goaltending, regardless of who is in net, is all that I want at this point.

Swedish team terminates contract of Andre Deveaux after vicious pre-game slash | Puck Daddy
That did not take long. The former NHLer is without a job, and it may take him a while to find a new one after a completely unnecessary and vile slash before a game last week.

Foley sees ‘advantage’ with no state income tax in Nevada | ProHockeyTalk
While Bill Foley has a very good point here, Florida does not have a state income tax either, yet the Panthers have not been able to attract top free agents.

Barry Trotz admits he was wrong about Alex Ovechkin | USA Today
Alex Ovechkin has quietly had a phenomenal season. He currently has 49 goals on the season, and should easily exceed the 50 goal mark by the time the playoffs begin. In the year of the goaltender, Ovechkin has proved to be as dominant as ever.

Jets player gives up breakaway goal after referee interferes with his stick – SBNation.com
The referee did try to get out of the way of the Jets player, but could not in time, and the Blackhawks quickly scored.

So what happened to the Senators? | TSN
Simple: the Senators fell back to earth and began playing like a team of their caliber should be playing.

A smart way to keep NHL teams from tanking for the draft – Sportsnet.ca
A very interesting idea that Jonathan Willis mentions in this article (via Adam Gold). Gold is suggesting that the draft order should be determined by the amount of points earned by a team after it has been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. As the article mentions, the worst teams will still usually manage to grab the top picks, simply because they play more games after elimination, and as a result will be able to rack up more points along the way.

Playoff watch — what the bubble teams need to do | ProHockeyTalk
The Senators and Panthers need to win as many games as possible (except for tonight, of course), while the Bruins need to lose.

How much MVP consideration should Wild G Devan Dubnyk get? – CBSSports.com
Devan Dubnyk will not win the MVP this season. Carey Price almost certainly will win the award, partially because there has not been a forward or defenseman who has clearly had an MVP worthy season (except for Mark Giordano). But, Dubnyk’s achievements with the Wild have been incredible, and I would not be surprised if he gets a few first-place votes for the award.

NHL playoff bubble teams you don’t want to play (and one you do) | Puck Daddy
If the Kings do make the playoffs (which I hope that they do not), I certainly would not want to face them.

Weekend Takeaways: Making first overall matter – Sportsnet.ca
Outside of giving the Presidents’ Trophy winning team a first-round bye I am not sure what incentive that you could dangle in front of teams in order to have them fight to be the best team during the regular season.

Tough times in Tampa: Garrison out 3-4 weeks after ‘pretty dirty’ Abdelkader hit | ProHockeyTalk
The Lightning, which are arguably the best overall team in the Eastern Conference, suffered a pretty big loss with Jason Garrison out for the next few weeks.

Let’s Go Red Wings!
