Quick Hits: Hello Granato, Goodbye Renney

Red Wings News

Red Wings to hire Tony Granato as assisant coach, lose Tom Renney to Hockey Canada | MLive.com
Granato played with the Rangers, Kings, and Sharks between 1988 and 2001. He took over as the head coach of the Avalanche in 2002, but was demoted to assistant coach in 2004 in favor of Joel Quenneville. He became the head coach of the Av’s again in 2008, but was fired at the end of the season. Granato has been an assistant coach for the Penguins since 2009.

Renney to be introduced as new Hockey Canada President | TSN
When Renney initially joined the Wings, I was skeptical as to what he would do, and if he would be any good. While it is hard to evaluate assistant coach’s, I think that Renney did an overall good job. But, he was in charge of the PP, which was often very lackluster.

Detroit Red Wings’ Mike Babcock won’t discuss extension during season | Detroit Free Press | freep.com
Babcock is a professional, so I would not look too deeply into this. He either wants it done and over with before the season begins, or it will have to wait until after the Wings win the Cup next June.

The Red Wings were given a “D” grade. That was the worst grade handed out to any team in the Eastern conference. I look at our offseason like this: we did not get any worse than we were last season, but we did not get any better either. We missed a huge opportunity this July to return to being a Cup contender, instead we re-signed Cleary and Quincey.

Rumor Roundup: Could Patrick Sharp end up with Canadiens or Panthers? | Post-to-Post
Talk about contrasting teams in terms of history and prestige…Regardless, I doubt that Sharp is a Blackhawk a year from now. Chicago does not need to move him ahead of this season, moving Leddy or Oduya would bring them under the cap, but they need to move him before the 2015-16 season.

Offseason grades: Sizing up moves by West teams | USA Today
In the West, I think the Stars and Blues made the best moves. You could probably throw the Ducks in there as well. All three teams addressed key needs and significantly improved.

NHL Offseason Review: Atlantic Division – CBSSports.com
In our division, I think that the Lightning and Panthers had the best offseason’s in the short-term. But, a couple of years from now, some of the contracts that those two teams gave out to players are going to be serious problems.
