Quick Hits: Kings Drop Wings; Patrick Kane Injured in Win

Red Wings News

Quick, Kings, frustrate Red Wings | FOX Sports
That’s eight wins in a row for the Kings and rumors of their demise have been greatly exaggerated. This team still has great underlying numbers, and the game could have gone either way. The Wings, meanwhile, are 2-1-1 on this tough road trip and have a very winnable game in San Jose tomorrow.

Wings captain Zetterberg: ‘I’m not 100 percent’ | The Detroit News
I don’t like the fact that nobody is calling what seems to be a clear brain injury a “concussion.” That said, Zetterberg insists he’s never had one before this, and isn’t worried about any long-term ramifications.

Red Wings’ Kyle Quincey hoping surgery for bone chips in ankle can be delayed until off-season | MLive.com
Apparently Quincey has been dealing with this issue since August. The decision was made then to attempt to play through it, and until now it hadn’t caused him to miss time. To me, the fact that he’s missed multiple games and saw a specialist yesterday suggests that surgery is a very real possibility. If the procedure is done now, he would likely be able to return near the end of the season. If he puts it off longer and the issue flares up again, we could be talking about him missing time into the playoffs. Stay tuned.

Mike Babcock: Red Wings’ Pavel Datsyuk best two-way player in world with the skill to wow you | MLive.com
Babs justifiably gushing over his star player. There are a lot of variables that go into an argument regarding the best “two-way player” (team strength, deployment, etc.), but Datsyuk is still in the conversation at age 36.

And this is a quick look at Pavel Datsyuk’s puck possession dominance both this year, as well as historically.

Patrick Kane out one month or more after boards crash: Reports | Puck Daddy – Yahoo Sports
Patrick Kane went barreling into the boards after he was cross checked from behind by Alex Petrovic. Pat Foley and Ed Olczyk were incensed about the play, but most rest of the world seems to think it was a freak accident caused by Kane losing an edge on a pretty unremarkable hockey play. What do you think? Was it dirty?

Analyzing the value of NHL draft picks | Sportsnet.ca
A really smart guy named Stephen Burtch conducted a study analyzing the value of NHL draft picks. The exercise only includes forwards, but it helps illustrate the inherent disadvantage the Red Wings are at by picking at the end of the draft every year.

NHL playoff expansion idea adds wild card teams | SI.com
I absolutely loathe the idea of one game play-in rounds. A wild-card team plays 82 regular season games (or 162 in baseball), and gets to be in the “playoffs” for one game if they lose. But these games have been exciting and successful for baseball and, more importantly, have made the league money. This idea extending into professional hockey is probably inevitable.

Las Vegas NHL ticket drive closes in on 7,000 deposits | USA Today
Businessman Bill Foley’s effort to bring an NHL team to Las Vegas seems to have plenty of traction. The Hockey Vision Las Vegas group are almost 70% of the way to their goal for deposits on 10,000 season tickets.

Nick Leddy, Islanders agree to seven-year deal | Newsday
Apparently Nick Leddy is plenty happy with the Islanders and this trade has certainly worked out for the team, as well. The new contract is manageable for the Isles and Leddy will have long-term security. He’ll also get another crack at free agency at 31, so this seems like a win for everyone involved.
