Quick Hits: McDavid Calls Out Manning and Nyquist is Struggling to Score Again

McDavid calls out Manning for being classless | TSN

Following the Oilers 6-5 loss to Philadelphia on Thursday night, Connor McDavid had some choice words for Philly’s defenceman Brandon Manning.

You may remember that last year Manning and McDavid collided, resulting in a broken clavicle for McDavid and a shortened rookie season. To the best of my knowledge, I don’t think it has been implied that the hit was intentional – except for by Don Cherry, someone we can all promptly ignore.

Well, this time around McDavid seemed to harbour some hard feelings against Manning and the two were often mixing it up on the ice during the game.

McDavid said Flyers defenceman Brandon Manning implied during the game that their collision last November in Edmonton – which fractured McDavid’s collarbone, causing him to miss 37 games and likely a Calder Trophy – was no accident.

“(Manning) wanted to say some comments today about what went on last year,” McDavid told reporters after Thursday’s loss. “I thought it was one of the classless things I’ve ever seen on the ice.

Manning obviously denied saying anything and it’s tough to say what happened.

Either way, this is a different side of the usually calm and composed McDavid.

Goal output paltry — again — from Detroit Red Wings’ Gustav Nyquist | Detroit Free Press

Two seasons removed from his impressive 65 point season, Nyquist is struggling to score. He has four goals after 27 games, putting him on pace for a paltry 12 goals this season.

Although he is on a better pace this year than last, Helene St. James notes that what is troubling about Nyquist is that he didn’t “heat up” last year and it’s spilling over into this season.

Nyquist has 15 points, a slightly better pace than last season’s 43. Scorers often run hot and cold, but Nyquist never heated up last season — and that trend is continuing this season. It’s not for a lack of playing time, as his 16:40 average is a minute-and-a-half more than last season and matches his ice time in 2014-15.

In the summer of 2015, Nyquist received a $19 million extension over 4 years. So far, he hasn’t quite lived up to his paycheque.
