Quick Hits: NHL Owners Not Keen on the Olympics and Athanasiou Set to Return Against the Blue Jackets

‘Strong negative sentiment’ to Olympics from NHL owners | TSN

No decision yet on whether NHL players can participate in the 2018 Olympics, but, owners are not keen on the idea of sending their players to South Korea.

Although there was no formal vote taken on the first day of the board of governors meeting, the owners are described as being “fatigued” by the last five rounds of Olympics and having a “strong negative sentiment” towards sending their players off yet again.

Bettman said owners remain concerned about the impact of shutting down the season for two-and-a-half weeks to attend the Olympics. A compressed schedule posed potentially greater risks to players with regard to injury. Then there was the all-too-obvious risk of players getting hurt while representing their countries at the Games, hurting their respective NHL teams.

The NHL owners are citing concerns about shutting the season down, players sustaining injuries and a compressed season. However, this is ultimately a money issue as the NHL does not benefit in any way from Olympics merchandising and the marketing of its players playing for their home counties.  On top of that, the IOC doesn’t want to pay any expenses related to insurance, travel and accommodation for NHL players.

It’s a business concern, but, either way, it is unlikely to sit well with players who want to go play in the Olympics and represent their countries.

Detroit Red Wings regain speedy Andreas Athanasiou | Detroit Free Press

Great news Red Wings fans, AA is set to return to the line up tomorrow against the Blue Jackets!

“I haven’t had any problems with my stride. It’s definitely one of the biggest parts of my game, is skating, so I had to make sure I felt comfortable with it and can skate like I did before.”

After missing four weeks with a sprained knee, it seems like he’s back in fighting form.

His return is timely as the Red Wings enter their longest home stand of the season and have a chance to rack up some points heading into the Holidays.
