Howdy, partners. The dusty trails of the NHL offseason (for all teams but two at this point) are starting to bother my allergies, and it’s only June. Yeehaw!
As you have probably noticed, it’s quiet around these parts. We’re still here, but admin has been enjoying the free time and getting caught up on stuff outside of hockey fandom. We do have some items to discuss today, beginning with Jesse Kiiskinen’s new ELC that was announced yesterday. We’ve already covered it! But there’s some other movement on another high-profile Red Wings prospect that we must dish about.
According to reports, Dmitri Buchelnikov’s KHL club, Vityaz, has run into some financial issues and are at risk of being removed from Russia’s pro league. Think of the situation sort of like the Arizona Coyotes, but Russian. The report indicates that Buchelnikov would exit and possibly join Detroit. That would obviously be welcomed news for fans and the organization. Buchelnikov, 21, is coming off of a career-best season with 54 points (13-39–54) in 65 games. A second round pick in 2022, Buch broke out on the scene as one of the KHL’s most electric and dynamic playmakers.
It seems awfully likely that Vityaz won’t have the cash to stick around, but as with any report out of Russia, you gotta take it with a grain of salt until there is actual confirmation from the Red Wings org, or NHL insiders. There’s also the issue of where Buch would fit if he made the jump across the pond. I would imagine he would start in Grand Rapids. Buchelnikov would be a KHL UFA if his team folded, so technically he could go to another club in Russia if the money is right. I’m sure the Red Wings front office is engaged on the matter and trying to get things sorted out. We’ll be keeping an eye on this one. Personally speaking, I’ll remain skeptical until a contract is signed with Detroit.
Lastly, in non Red Wings-related news, the Stanley Cup Final is set — a repeat of last year. Edmonton vs Florida. How exciting. Game one is tonight, and just for shits & giggles, what are your predictions? I’m guessing Florida gets this done again in six games and does so by sticking to its brand — gritty hockey that doesn’t skimp out on taking cheap shots to finish the job. I’ll be casually watching, since honestly I’d rather spend my time watching the Tigers.
Have a good Wednesday, take care, drink some water, make sure you get up and take a walk every now and then. kthxbye!
