Ahead of last night’s win against Toronto, the Red Wings trimmed the preseason roster to 28. So, five more men will have to go beforeThursday, October 9. Here is a look at who remains:

It is entirely possible that Steve Yzerman cuts a veteran in favor of a younger player, potentially putting two rookies on the opening night roster. History tells us that won’t happen, but what’s the fun in that?
I thought that Carter Mazur would be a lock for a roster spot. His NHL debut was cut short due to a very unfortunate injury, and I thought maybe there would be some sympathy from the front office about that. Could still happen, but I think my two picks would be Michael Brandsegg-Nygard and/or Emmitt Finnie. Finnie has been an absolute menace in the preseason and has captured a lot of attention from Red Wings fans. He’s just 20 years old and only has a little experience at the professional level, but he’s shown that he could potentially hang around in the NHL as a high-energy forward with a scoring touch.
The last preseason game is tomorrow night against Toronto at LCA. We’ll know what the final roster will look like in the coming days, so sit tight! Let’s do a little “Friday before the regular season starts” exercise, shall we? If the Red Wings were to give one spot to a rookie, who would it be?
