There are some logistical quagmires that need to be worked out before Kovalchuk could return to the NHL. Since he is retired from the NHL, he would need the approval of all 30 NHL teams before he can return. If he does, should the Wings go after him? Of course. He is still an elite player, and would be a perfect upgrade over Johan Franzen.
Pascal Dupuis won’t return this season – PensBurgh
Pascal Dupuis was only able to appear in 16 games for the Penguins this season, scoring 11 points. He has not played since November 15th against the Rangers. Dupuis should be able to return next season.

The way I look at it, unless Brendan Shanahan wants to completely rebuild the Leafs this offseason, moving Phil Kessel should only happen if the return is relatively high. With better supporting talent (I.e., Connor McDavid, Jack Eichel), Kessel could be one of the best wingers in the league.
