Quick Hits: Signings Galore, World Cup AND Olympics, and Seasons After Losing the Stanley Cup

Detroit Red Wings News

Red Wings Sign Tomas Jurco to a Two-Year Deal – Winging It In Motown
Typical Friday news dump. Except wait, this was actually a good signing, so I don’t know why they’re trying to hide it.

Red Wings goalie prospect Chase Perry back in juniors for more ice time | Detroit Free Press
2014 draft pick Chase Perry left Colorado College to return to the Wenatchee Wild of the BCHL. On top of the playing time issue, I think this is a good move for him to regain his confidence after a garbage season at CC, in part caused by the team in front of him. At 19 years old, he’s got tons of time to develop.

By The Numbers: Niklas Kronwall – Detroit Red Wings – News
Bill Roose reviews Niklas Kronwall’s season with some fun numbers. My favorite? A perfect 1.000 percent winning percentage on faceoffs.

Around the NHL

The Canadiens have signed Alex Semin to a one-year deal – Eyes On The Prize
Low risk, medium reward, if you ask me. But it’s for a division opponent, so I hope the signing crashes and burns.

Adam Larsson Signed to 6 Year, $25 Million Contract by Devils – In Lou We Trust
Sources say there’s a clause in the contract that will allow both parties to mutually terminate the contract in Year 4 so Larsson can go play at home in Sweden.

Capitals Re-Sign Braden Holtby – Japers’ Rink
The Caps and Holtby avoid an arbitration ruling and go straight to a five-year contract extension. As risky as big contracts are for goaltenders, I’m surprised Washington decided to wait this long.

Fehr says players want to be in Olympics and World Cup | ProHockeyTalk
It will be up to the players. Do you really think Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, Henrik Lundqvist and soon Jack Eichel and Connor McDavid will sit out the Olympics? I understand the disruptions for the NHL, but they’ll have to quell players’ desire to play for their country.

The Clock is Ticking for Stepan and the Rangers – Blueshirt Banter
Only a few more hours before the Rangers act like Stepan is a garbage hockey player in an arbitration hearing.

The daunting task of contending after being a Stanley Cup Finalist – Raw Charge
Raw Charge looks at the potential fates of the Stanley Cup runner-up Tampa Bay Lightning. Of course, we all know they won’t make it back because the Red Wings will get in the way.

What’s next for the Arizona Coyotes? – Five For Howling
Glendale tries to back out of a contract it doesn’t like. Now they and the Coyotes have an “amended” two-year agreement.

Gary Bettman says the shootout is here to stay in NHL | Puck Daddy – Yahoo Sports
Ask me to care about eliminating the shootout when Pavel Datsyuk retires.

Expansion Soon — Musical Chairs to Follow – The Cannon
Jackets Cannon takes a general look at the many options the NHL won’t consider for re-alignment if expansion is successful.

Patrick Eaves wins title at Smashfest IV – NHL.com – NHL Insider
Eaves! Patrick Eaves won a charity table tennis tournament.

Tomorrowland in the prism of professional sports and the effects of injuries – Arctic Ice Hockey
I’m afraid professional sports will never see athletes bowing out of games due to injury unless it’s physically impossible for them to play. There’s too much money involved, and the habit of playing through the pain is too ingrained.

Kings have special day with Special Olympians | Puck Daddy – Yahoo Sports
The 2015 Special Olympics Opening Ceremonies were held this past weekend at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. “The Kings have a unique bond with special needs children. Chris Sutter, son of L.A. coach Darryl Sutter, has Down syndrome, and has humanized the issue for a lot of players.”
