“I could care less about people saying things about me. I’m a big boy, I can handle it. I signed up for this. That’s what you put yourself in this situation for. The media scrutiny, whatever that is, I can handle that,” said Scheifele. “In a society where you can hide behind a keyboard, that is the problem. I can handle the criticism. I got suspended four games. I got held accountable. But there’s no right to go after my parents, to go after my loved ones. That’s completely unacceptable. It’s bad to say but that’s our society.
I don’t know who is bullying Sheifele’s family for this but holy shit what an absolutely stupid thing to do.
For what it’s worth, I buy about 80/20 on the “Scheifele isn’t this kind of player” thing. He’s got plenty of NHL games where he hasn’t been on the radar as anything other than a guy who tries real hard and sometimes lets his emotions get the better of him. What concerns me about the 28-year old going forward is that he’s going to continue playing under Paul Maurice and every time that guy opens his mouth he reminds me that he’s basically the nerdy Mike Babcock.
On the argument that he really truly was trying to prevent a goal? I think that’s an unfortunate double-down on a real shitty conscious decision he made in a heated moment. I appreciate that he showed what I believe is honest concern for Evans. At this point, he’s absolutely “the kind of guy I’d want on my team.”
How much longer that lasts is kind of up in the air. I think the suspension should have been longer because I think all suspensions should be longer. This one might be a real case where it is enough to convince the player to never do this kind of stuff again.
