Quick Hits: The 4 Nations Face-Off Wrap-Up Edition

Red Wings Rumblings

That’s a wrap for the NHL 4 Nations Face-Off, after Team Canada eliminated Team USA in the championship game thanks to an overtime goal from Connor McDavid. I’d say this tournament was an overwhelming success for the NHL, despite some light bedlam with injury rules. Both Canada and USA seem to have reignited the rivalry ahead of the Olympics, and that’s simply a good thing for the sport. At the end of the day, that’s all that matters — the sport. Nothing else.

Dylan Larkin had himself a real journey the last couple of weeks. Started as a bottom-six player and ended up as a top-line guy in the biggest game of the tournament. This was huge for Larkin because you finally started to see him get the recognition that he deserves. We all know that he is an excellent player, but now that he’s been in the national spotlight, others are finally noticing what kind of player he is. I’m really excited to see him (and others) in the 2026 Winter Olympics.

So now it’s back to business. The Red Wings will get in one more day of practice before NHL action resumes. They’ll kickoff the last leg of the season with a back-to-back at home starting tomorrow against Minnesota. This is an early puck-drop network game. I suspect there will be a lot of eyes on this game. Detroit restarts regular season action sitting in the second wild card spot, just one point behind Ottawa with a game in hand. Detroit has one of the more difficult schedules in this final stretch, so this is going to be a real test for Todd McLellan and his guys. McLellan has already proven to be a successful move and has more than earned the trust from the fanbase.

One item I wanted to mention is regarding streaming options for the Wings. If you have Amazon Prime, you’ll be able to stream Red Wings, Pistons, and Tigers games through that platform for an additional price of $19.99 per month. This means very little for those who already pay for FanDuel Sports streaming on the standalone app, but I am interested to see the difference in functionality and user experience between the two. If you plan to use Amazon’s service, let us know how it goes.

Have a good Friday, friends. Enjoy the weekend now that we have our beloved Red Wings back!
