Seider and Who?

Sam Stockton writes about Moritz Seider, who is still an unsigned RFA, and who the budding superstar could play with this upcoming season. Two names — Ben Chiarot or Simon Edvinsson. Stockton predicts it will be Chiarot alongside Seider to start, with Edvinsson sliding into that role later into the season.

This is a very likely outcome, however, I’m VERY interested in a duo of Edvinsson-Seider. That could be one of the best young D foundations in the league if you ask me.

Something New for Cleveland

Ansar Khan has an article out that talks about Detroit’s 47th pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, Brady Cleveland. Cleveland, a massive defenseman, played his freshman year with Wisconsin in the NCAA. He’ll be making the jump over to Colorado College this upcoming season, and the hope is that the change of scenery will unlock new development opportunities for the young prospect.

“I know the type of player I am; I know what I’m capable of,” Cleveland said. “I think just getting out there every game and playing more minutes is what I would like to do. Just helping my team win. Just being better offensively. I know I can work on that, but also defensively, cleaning up a few things. Being someone who gives a good first pass and be a shutdown defenseman.”

NHL News

Details Emerge about Marek’s Ouster

This is perhaps the biggest storyline in the NHL right now, at least from a fan perspective. The Athletic published an article yesterday that revealed Marek’s departure from Sportsnet was because of allegations that he shared insider draft information with former NHL scout Mark Seidel. That apparently triggered an inquiry from the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

“The league was concerned about the potential misuse or dissemination of insider information,” they wrote. “According to a publicly available document from the Nevade Gaming Control Board on requirements licensed books must adhere to regarding wagers on the NHL Draft, ‘acceptance of wagers which involve a specific player must cease 24 hours prior to the start of the first round. Acceptance of all other wagers must cease prior to the start of their respective round.”

I find this incredibly weak from both the NHL and Sportsnet. The league made a conscious decision to get into bed with the sportsbetting world (of course, why wouldn’t they?), and if Marek, a beloved personality, is going to face fallout from something like this — what about the other NHL insiders that do the same thing? Seems like the NHL made an issue out of a non-issue here. That being said, I hope Marek gets picked up by ESPN or something.
