Red Wings Rumblings

The Red Wings have two games left in the month of January – and that starts tonight against the Los Angeles Kings at Little Caesars Arena. Detroit is currently riding back-to-back divisional wins (Montreal, Tampa) and are currently have a record of 8-4-0 this month. Wins are gonna be tough to come by for a week or so — the Wings are set for a swing out to Western Canada starting Thursday, and won’t return home until Saturday, February 8 against the Lightning.

The Wings are currently four points from the final wild card spot, so the team remains in a position where the margin of error is really thin. They’ll have to bring home some points from this upcoming road trip.

We got some good news about Axel Sandin Pellikka in the last couple of days — ASP’s agent confirmed that the star defenseman will leave his SHL club after this season, paving the way for the former first-rounder to start his pro career in North America. I’d be shocked if ASP wasn’t given every opportunity to make the NHL roster in the offseason. I would expect the same situation with Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, but we’ll wait and see. Both MBN and ASP are playing with Skelleftea, a team that has really struggled this season. No matter, because ASP is finally coming HOME. We can feel good about that.

Meanwhile, the Grand Rapids Griffins remain as one of the hottest teams in the AHL. They completed the series sweep over Manitoba Saturday night, making the Griffins 6-1-1-0 in their past eight road games. The 2-1 win was led by Sheldon Dries who scored both goals, and goaltender Sebastian Cossa who stopped 33 of 34 shots faced.

In Toledo — the Walleye split their weekend series with Iowa. I just have to show you this crazy save by Wings prospect Carter Gylander.. It’s too good not to share:
