In Red Wings Land

Filip Zadina ‘pressed into service’ for Detroit Red Wings with Anthony Mantha out – The Detroit News

By now we’ve seen Zadina’s 2019-20 debut with the Wings, but there are a number of interesting quotes from Blashill in here:

“This is just one moment in time (for Zadina), not the moment.”

Taking a bit of pressure off the kid (along with another comment about how he had played consecutive nights prior to the Canes’ game as well. Then:

“But it’s not something where he’s been so good we had to get him in the NHL. It’s more that we’re dealing with injuries and he was pressed into service. But he has a great opportunity to grind out a great game here.”

That’s kind of… ouch.

Around the League

As always with me, I think pretty much every suspension is too short. Bortuzzo viciously chopped down on a part where he knew a player wasn’t padded. I also can’t help but think this isn’t more than a single game if Arvidsson isn’t as seriously injured as he ended up being.

Reinvigorated Leafs eager to keep pushing forward with Keefe at helm | Toronto Sun

Babcock was alleged to have asked one of the Leafs’ rookies to list the players on the team from hardest-working to those who, in the eyes of the rookie, didn’t have a strong work ethic. The rookie did so, not wanting to upset his coach, but was taken aback when Babcock told the players who had been listed at the bottom.

If this is true it’s incredibly screwed up.

(*According to The Athletic’s Ian Tulloch, it is true, and Mitch Marner was the rookie in question.)
