At least 17 NHL teams have reduced pay amid COVID-19 crunch – TSN
Sources say the Sabres are considering an internal salary cap in the low $70 million range; the Arizona Coyotes, who recently failed to make on-time signing bonus payments to a number of players, may be operating just south of $70 million under their next GM; the Pittsburgh Penguins are reportedly planning to budget in the low-to-mid $70 million range on an $81.5 million limit.
There’s so much to this post that I had a hard time clipping just one part. The Senators’ coaching staff had to petition the league to get paid. The Red Wings aren’t listed as one of the teams here, but the “at least” doesn’t give me good feelings, since Seravalli doesn’t mention which teams simply aren’t telling or those he hasn’t checked on.
With the clipped part, one has to wonder how much longer Jack Eichel is in Buffalo. The Pegulas have more than enough money and the Sabres are still profitable (Buffalo is a hell of a loyal market, all things considered).
NHL awards: Flyers’ Sean Couturier wins 2019-20 Frank J. Selke Trophy – NBC
“Ever since I’ve come up in the league, guys like Bergeron, [Anze] Kopitar, [Jonathan] Toews, Jordan Staal, those were all guys that were really tough to play against, really reliable defensively and also offensively,” Couturier said Thursday night in a video interview. “Those are kind of the guys I tried to model my game after. It’s one thing to produce offensively, but if you want to be out on the ice when you’re up a goal late in the game, you’ve got to learn to be responsible defensively and it’s always something I tried to take pride in. Obviously over the last few years, I’ve kind of taken my offensive side of the game to another level. Honestly, just to be mentioned and nominated with those guys this year and in the past, it’s an honor, a great honor.”
There’s an autoplaying video on this page so I understand if you skip it. I only included this because the PHWA released the full voting and I wanted to say that Seth Rorabaugh is the guy who gave Luke Glendening his lone 5th-place vote and also left Couturier completely off his ballot. Rob Rossi also had a terrible ballot, which just goes to show the Pittsburgh writers are questionable (he had Christopher Tanev at 3rd on his ballot).
