HSJ takes a look at Detroit’s approach to the goaltending position this season — and it certainly looks like it will be a lot like last season. A three-pronged approach with Cam Talbot, Ville Husso, and Alex Lyon. There’s also Jack Campbell as an “insurance policy” if one were to go down. One could argue Sebastian Cossa should be in line for a call up if need be, but I personally think the front office wants Cossa to be hyper-focused on his development as an every-night starter.. And the best avenue for that will be in Grand Rapids.
Here’s a snippet from head coach Derek Lalonde on the approach:
“That’s going to be a healthy competition,” coach Derek Lalonde said this week. “I’ve been speaking with all three goalies. I think Steve did a pretty good job of explaining to them the situation, that it’s going to be a competition. All three goalies over the last couple years have proven to play at a very high level.”
Detroit’s second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft has hockey in his blood. His father is an NHL coach, he grew up playing hockey with his brothers in Minnesota, and now he’s looking forward to super-charging his development in the NCAA. Dan Cleary refers to Max Plante as “Little sponge.”
I think Plante is an under-the-radar prospect. I’m excited to see how he grows in college hockey before he makes the jump to pro hockey. Keep an eye on him.
At this point, does anyone give a shit about Mike Babcock and his time in Detroit? The answer is no for me, but it’s always interesting to hear from former players. This time around, it’s Jimmy Howard:
“The one time I really got pissed off at him was when I got put up for rookie of the year,” Howard said. ‘He did a media scrum right in front of me in Phoenix, right before the first round (of the playoffs).
Right in front of the all the media . . . he was like, ‘My vote’s for (Vancouver defenseman) Tyler Myers.’ I was like, ‘Huh. That’s nice. That’s great. Thanks Mike. Appreciate it.’”
