Happy Friday! Detroit’s top pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, has signed his entry-level contract:
MBN will play in Sweden next season with SHL’s Skelleftea AIK, along with Axel Sandin Pellikka. Sure to be a fun team to keep tabs on. I’m really excited for MBN — he’s got a lethal shot, which was on display at development camp. Playing with a top-tier club like Skelleftea makes matters even better if you ask me.
Griffins announce 2024-2025 schedule
Griffins fans rejoice! The 72-game schedule will begin with the Griffins hosting the Milwaukee Admirals at Van Andel Arena on Friday, Oct. 11 at 7 PM ET. After last season’s success, this is going to be a fun team to watch. I suggest any Red Wings fan in Michigan make it a plan to get over to Grand Rapids and check out a game. We have a lot of fun on this side of the state. 😉
Meanwhile… Trenton Bliss has re-signed with the Toledo Walleye for another season.
On a more somber note, the hockey world learned this week that former Red Wing Greg Johnson, who died five years ago by suicide, was posthumously diagnosed with CTE.
“I had no idea what CTE even stood for when my dad took his life,” Carson said in a statement released by the Boston-based Concussion Legacy Foundation. “Now understanding that the hits he endured throughout his hockey career damaged his brain, I want all athletes to understand the risks and I want the NHL to start acknowledging it exists and do more to protect its players so other daughters don’t have to lose their fathers.“
CTE is a real issue that the NHL and some other pro sports organizations need to come to grips with. The NFL has taken some measures, but of course, the NHL is still stuck in its own stubborn ways:
