Quick Hits: The Salary Cap Myth Edition

Red Wings Rumblings

Rough game for the Red Wings last night against the Maple Leafs. The offense struggled to get anything going, which ultimately resulted in a 2-0 loss. No time to think about it, because the Wings are back in action tonight — Hosting the Ottawa Senators at LCA. You can find the recap here, and here’s a quote from head coach Derek Lalonde:

“Despite the loss, head coach Derek Lalonde said he was encouraged by Detroit’s defensive structure.

‘That’s an important part of what we’re trying to accomplish,’ Lalonde said. ‘All of our bigger structure. We’ll look back at that game and grade that out. There were some mishaps. Even watching between periods, a couple of those really good looks they had started with puck play more than structure.'”

Couple of Roster Moves

Old news by now, but Alex Chiasson has been released from his PTO contract, and prospect Emmitt Finnie was assigned to the WHL’s Kamloops Blazers.

NHL News

Swayman Saga Continues

It sounds an awful lot like Jeremy Swayman wants to stay a Bruin, according to Wyshynski’s latest article, which includes some quotes from “FACEOFF: Inside the NHL.” I still think this deal gets done with Boston eventually, but that’s not stopping trade rumors from swirling.

Sports Illustrated has the Red Wings as a “top trade destination” for Swayman. That’s nice and all, but it’s a total longshot. This is not an official report, it’s all speculation. The Wings would need to do a lot of heavy lifting in less than a week to get a trade in place and then a new deal for Swayman. Just doesn’t seem like a possibility at this point, especially since they would have quite a bit of cap work to do.

Vegas Gets Another Assist from the NHL

Per Friedman (and others), The NHL and NHLPA have reached an agreement on Robin Lehner’s situation in Las Vegas. Long story short, Lehner will be paid and it will not count against VGK’s cap. So, once again, the NHL salary cap seems like more of a guideline than a rule.
