Red Wings Rumblings

Happy Victory Friday to all who celebrate!

Quite the win for the Red Wings on home ice against a division rival last night. Let’s be clear about the opponent — the Montreal Canadiens are a tough team right now and have been playing good hockey as of late. The Wings handled them well and reached a season-high for shots on goal. A special night for the captain Dylan Larkin in his 700th career NHL game — a couple of points, including his 550th career point. This win should be a good momentum-builder as the Wings look to get some revenge against Tampa on Saturday. If they can beat the Bolts, the conversation on this team’s postseason chances will swing to a more-positive outlook.

It was also a successful night for the Grand Rapids Griffins. The Red Wings affiliate rumbled the third period for four goals, taking down the Manitoba Moose despite a scoring deficit most of the game. Carter Mazur returned to the lineup after a lengthy bout with injury. The “Jackson Jewel” picked up an assist in his first game since October. Also a big night for prospect Ondrej Becher, who had a goal and an assist. Ville Husso got the start and stopped 39 of 43 shots. Watch the video highlights here.

Okay, next and final item of business… The NHL unveiled the Quarter Century Rosters for the Wings. We can all debate this in a friendly manner, right?

First Team

Forwards
Pavel Datsyuk
Steve Yzerman
Henrik Zetterberg

Defensemen
Niklas Kronwall
Nicklas Lidstrom

Goalie
Chris Osgood

Second Team

Forwards
Sergei Fedorov
Dylan Larkin
Brendan Shanahan

Defensemen
Chris Chelios
Brian Rafalski

Goalie
Dominik Hasek

Kinda difficult to NOT get this right, but everyone has their own opinion. I like that Larkin made it, I think that’s a nice and well-deserved gesture for him. Personally would have liked to see Sergei Fedorov on the first team over Henrik Zetterberg, all due respect. But hey, what’s it really matter? Some have debated Osgood, but let’s just accept the fact that he was a very important player during a very important era of this franchise. Had Dominik Hasek spent most of his career in Detroit, it would be a much different story. Duh.

Enjoy your weekend, friends. We’ll see ya on game day tomorrow!
