Quick Hits: The Rebuild is Dead Edition

The Big Story

5 storylines to watch in the NHL’s 2nd half – By: Tim Wharnsby: CBC Sports

Looking ahead to the last 3 months of the year, here’re a few things to keep an eye on around the league. The Calder race should be a whole lot of fun to keep an eye on. I know Matthews is the presumptive favorite but don’t count out Laine, Provorov, Werenski or Murray just yet. Also, I’m all for McDavid winning both the Hart and Art Ross this year. Especially if the guy he beats out for both is Patrick Kane.

In Red Wings Land

Detroit Red Wings, NHL trade deadline and the new reality – By: Pat Caputo: The Oakland Press

With yesterday’s win against the Canadiens, the points raised in this piece are only more relevant. Whatever short-term success the Wings might have, will it really make a difference over the last 3 months of the year? Will it be enough to make it to the postseason? And if they do make it back there, are we good enough to hang with a top-tier Eastern team for seven games?

Sure, the Wings are within striking distance right now. That doesn’t mean the rebuild is cancelled. We’re still in a similar spot we were just two months ago. Perhaps this Wings team is a little bit better than a last-place finish. That doesn’t necessarily put us in a position to make a run for the top-16.

From the article:

The Red Wings have pieces to trade. It may be time to pull the cord on the playoff streak.

It’s to the point where the Red Wings must perform every game like Saturday or it is inevitable they won’t get in anyway.

It’s a tough pill to swallow, but it’s the Red Wings’ new reality, unless they get on an immediate and extensive roll.

Agreed. Let’s not mess up this opportunity to improve our prospects in the long-term just because we’re technically still in the hunt.
