Quick Hits: The Too-Lithe Krug Edition

In Red Wings Land

Stage Is Set For Red Wings To Make Run At Torey Krug – 97.1 the Ticket

Will Burchfield takes a rosy look at the upside of the Michigan native, childhood Red Wings fan, and appreciator-of-Jeff-Blashill Torey Krug potentially joining the Red Wings if he ends up a free agent:

Krug to the Red Wings makes a good deal of sense, aside from the geographical ties. Detroit can certainly give him the $7-8 million per year he’ll command on the open market. Sound high? A puck mover and power play QB extraordinaire — with some snarl, to boot — Krug ranks sixth among NHL defensemen in points over the last five seasons, ahead of the likes of Kris Letang, Keith Yandle and Drew Doughty.

Not passing to Bergeron, Marchand, and Pastrnak might not help those numbers, but hey we do have SOME scorers.

The article goes on to discuss Krug’s history with Jeff Blashill and where he might slot into the future of the Red Wings’ defensive corps. It’s a pretty good read and I will say despite that it’s perhaps a bit idealistic, Burchfield does a good job of mentioning the downsides/pitfalls/context that plays in (like Krug’s age, Blashill’s tentative tenure, Krug even making it to free agency, and the loss of luster in signing with Detroit).

Around the League

The NHL’s coronavirus pause: Possible playoff host cities, virtual draft, player concerns and more – ESPN

A whole compendium of updates on what’s going on in the world of the NHL amid the Covid-19 crisis including glimpses into where we stand with current ideas for resuming games, saving the playoffs, the NHLPA’s take, the salary cap, the health of the teams, and plenty of other stuff:

Has there been any update on which cities could host empty-arena games?

Kaplan: Among the reported possible locations for neutral-site games, which would likely be held in empty arenas, are Grand Forks, North Dakota; Manchester, New Hampshire; and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

But Daly said the NHL hasn’t even “created the field yet” in determining which sites would work. In fact, once word got out that the NHL was considering neutral-site locations, cities and venues across North America began reaching out to the league, pitching themselves as potential hosts.

”We do have people putting together the comprehensive laundry list of what we would need from facilities and evaluating some facilities on some level,” he said. “But I can’t tell you we’ve even finished creating a list [of potential sites], much less narrowed it down.”
