Red Wings Rumblings
Reports out of Nashville indicate that goalie Yaroslav Askarov has requested a trade and will not report to the AHL. His reasoning is understandable, he’s got a bright future but is essentially boxed out of a role in Nashville with Juuse Saros locked up for eight years. This article from Sam Stockton explores the possibility of a trade from Detroit’s POV. Long story short, it doesn’t really make sense with three goalies on the roster and two top prospects (Sebastian Cossa, Trey Augustine) that will be knocking on the door soon enough. Also worth noting that Askarov, at 22 years old, has just three games of NHL experience. Doesn’t seem like a very Steve Yzerman move to hand over such a high-leverage position to a player with such little experience.
Where will the top prospects end up this season? Max Bultman over at The Athletic takes a closer look in this article. Max predicts that Marco Kasper and Carter Mazur will see some time in the NHL — with Nate Danielson and Sebastian Cossa spending his entire season in Grand Rapids. Interesting that he believes Michael Brandsegg-Nygard could play in the AHL this season — that’s largely because there are reports overseas that MBN will attend Red Wings training camp next month. My money is MBN in the SHL.
NHL News
Couple of items in the NHL world to talk about today… The Edmonton Oilers decided not to match offer sheets from St. Louis on Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg, so those two are Blues now. The two teams did pull of a trade, though!
Also, Oscar Klefbom is retiring from the NHL after seven seasons. Always thought he was underrated in his younger years. Happy retirement to the Swede.
There’s also this whole trade that brought Patrik Laine to Montreal. I feel like I should be more worried about that, but I really don’t. Congrats to all involved. You did it.
