Quick Hits: The Trades and Trophies Edition

In Red Wings Land

Possible trade targets for the Detroit Red Wings, who have money to be buyers
But at some point later in the summer or early fall, there will be opportunities to make some trades — deals that might not cost the Red Wings as much as you’d think.

The reason is the upper limit of the salary cap will stay at $81.5 million in the new collective bargaining agreement — and will stay at $81.5 million until revenues reach $4.8 billion, which will trigger a formula to increase the cap.

Steve Yzerman should explore trades to take advantage of Detroit’s position in regards to the cap compared to some other teams, and I believe he will.

Around the NHL

Ron Francis talks about how the NHL’s return and CBA may affect NHL Seattle – NHL to SEATTLE
Francis can offer to take that player in exchange for a younger, better player coming via a trade. For an example of this, see the Vegas expansion draft selection of Clayton Stoner and his $3.5 million salary from the Anaheim Ducks. In return, the Ducks sent former Seattle Thunderbirds defenseman Shea Theodore – who was not exposed in the draft — to Vegas.

The consensus among NHL media is that the league’s general managers have learned from the Vegas experience and won’t make these same kind of deals this time around.

I’m not so sure about that, and don’t underestimate the chance that NHL GMs won’t make new bad deals.

Ted Lindsay Award finalists announced
Leon Draisaitl, Nathan MacKinnon and Artemi Panarin were named finalists for the Ted Lindsay Award on Tuesday.

The award is given annually to the most outstanding player in the NHL as voted by fellow members of the NHL Players’ Association. The winner will be announced during the Conference Finals and Stanley Cup Final.
