Red Wings Rumblings

The Red Wings are capping off the month of January with a four-game win streak after last night’s shootout victory in Edmonton. If you were able to stay up through the whole game — good on ya, because I was passed out just before the third period even started.

It was a monster night for Alex Lyon, who stopped 45 of 47 shots and slammed the door shut in the shootout with two saves against RNH and Connor McDavid. What really impressed me was, again, the young core of players that Detroit is leaning on as of late. Marco Kasper played over 20 minutes, had 5 SOG, and picked up an assist on Dylan Larkin’s game-tying goal. That assist was a gosh-damn beauty. A stretch pass off the boards that caught Larkin in stride. Doesn’t get much better than that.

I was also impressed by Albert Johansson, as I often am. You’re really starting to see why this guy was a second-round pick, and for some prospect analysts, should have been a late first-round pick. Going into his draft year, everyone praised AlJo for his skating ability. That was his best attribute and still is. That was on display last night when he had to match up with McDavid. He’s a smart player and an even beautiful skater — check out this play.

Big win to kickoff this road trip and a great way to end the longest January you have ever seen. The Wings went 10-4-0 this month. That’s pretty damn good for ANY team.

If you missed the game, here are the official highlights from the NHL:

Detroit is now looking at a back-to-back against Calgary and Vancouver this weekend. This is going to be a short month for the team with the Four Nations Face-Off in the coming weeks. Just eight games on the schedule for Detroit in February. We are smack dab in the middle of a race for a wild card spot. I have no expectations to make the playoffs, but let’s see if Todd McLellan can will these men to a postseason berth.
