Quick Hits: What Should The Wings Do When Pavel Datsyuk Returns?

Red Wings News

5 things to watch: Detroit Red Wings will have roster decision to make when Pavel Datsyuk returns | MLive.com
Pavel Datsyuk’s return is going to be a pleasant sight, but also extremely interesting. The Wings will need to move one player in order to make room for Datsyuk. The easiest, and as the result, the most likely, scenario involves waiving Tomas Jurco, who is waiver-exempt. That said, the Wings want Jurco to playing for them, not for the Griffins. Waiving Nestrasil or Cleary are both options, but the former is becoming increasingly unlikely, and I am skeptical whether the Wings would do the latter. As Khan mentions, there is also the possibility of waiving Brian Lashoff and going with six defenseman. Lashoff would probably not be claimed, and even if he was, it is not like we do not have cheap defenseman playing in the AHL who could replace him. But, the argument against doing this is that the Wings would rather have Lashoff as their #7 defenseman, instead of having a player like Ouellet or Sproul be a consistent healthy scratch.

Red Wings’ Luke Glendening well ahead of last season’s offensive pace after goal vs. Anaheim | MLive.com
Glendening is bound to score more goals this season, but, I do not expect him to surpass the five-goal mark by much.

Mike Babcock’s return to Detroit anything but done deal | USA Today
Babcock’s return is obviously not a given. But, my gut feeling is that he will return. In my mind, there are only a few opportunities that he would possibly consider pursuing over the Wings (the Maple Leafs, Penguins, Canadiens, Kings, and Rangers are the only teams that make sense). As the article points out, I doubt that money is an issue. And, while the Wings would not view having to promote Jeff Blashill as a terrible “plan B”, he is still not the ideal candidate when compared to Babcock.

Mike Babcock impressed by Red Wings’ work ethic, speed and special teams, but wants more offense | MLive.com

So far the Wings have played really well. Especially when you consider that the season is only two games old. Saturday’s loss was a disappointing one, but, it did not reflect the Wings’ play during that game. So far, I like the way our season has begun.

Fitting. This way, Connor McDavid will be able to give the Sabres‘ new first-round pick their jersey. Well thought-out, Gary, well thought-out.

Steven Stamkos scored a hattrick as the Lightning beat the Canadiens 7-1 yesterday.

Milbury opens up about why he’s against fighting in NHL | ProHockeyTalk
As I have said before, I think that the NHL should not ban fighting outright, but rather allow it fizzle out by itself. Junior players are fighting less, and Europeans really do not fight, and since teams are not “coaching” players to fight anymore, there will be fewer and fewer players who want to, or even can, fight.

AHL drops 12-game suspension on Trevor Gillies; is it enough? | The Hockey News
I do not know if it was enough, but he certainly deserved the punishment that he received. A 25-game suspension may have been more appropriate.

VIDEO: Defenseman Anton Stralman stops sure goal with kick save | CBSSports.com
What a great save! The Lightning went on to win this game 7-1, but were only up 2-1 when this occurred. The game may have ended differently had it not been for Strålman’s save.

Trevor Gillies does not belong in professional hockey – SBNation.com
This guy scored one goal in 45 games during one of his years in the OHL. I know the level of competition in the OHL is fairly high, but still, one goal? Kyle Quincey scored 29 goals over the course of two seasons in the OHL.
