Recap: Detroit Red Wings 3 Carolina Hurricanes 1

You know, I had a feeling today might suck. Detroit coming in to an inferior team with an early start.. All day I had “man, this game is going to be bad isn’t it?” in the back of my head. Detroit comes into the game having won their last two games, and straight out of the gate you could tell they wanted to keep this ball rolling…

1st Period:

The game started and sorta just coasted.. Detroit got a four minute power-play opportunity, but couldn’t get it done. After that, it was pretty boring to watch until the later minutes. First goal of the game came from Pavel Datsyuk, on probably one of the most insane shifts I have seen from him in a while. Jonathan Ericsson made a great play to setup Pavel, and the Magic Man shoots it through Cam Ward’s five-hole. Exactly two minutes later, Tomas Tatar nets himself a pretty goal on a feed from Datsyuk, but can you really call it a feed? Tatar just kinda took the puck and threw it at the net. I don’t know if you all know this, but the combo of 43-13-21 is unbelievably good. Petr Mrazek looked sharp through 20 minutes.

2nd Period:

Detroit came out playing the same way as they were in the first. Sharp, and giving Carolina very few chances to make things happen. Tomas Tatar got his second goal of the night off of a ridiculous feed from Pavel. Here look:

Pretty good if you ask me. Petr Mrazek remained sharp, but gave up a redirect goal to Jay McClement 17:11 into the period.

3rd Period:

A somewhat uneventful period of hockey.. Lots of trap-style hockey by Detroit. Again giving Carolina very little chance to put anything together. There was an empty net for two minutes at the end, but Detroit couldn’t get Tatar the hat trick 🙁

Strange game, this one. Detroit was outshot, and Carolina had a lot of chances to score.. Thankfully the defense played quite well in front of Petr Mrazek, in addition to him having a really solid game. He’s now 3-0-0 since coming in relief for Jonas Gustavsson and I’m starting to think that we should probably just keep him here. (I know we can’t shut up)

Even though he didn’t put up any points, Riley Sheahan was ridiculously active today, and played a fantastic game. He is undoubtedly the second-line center for this team. The Datsyuk line combined for 6 points total, which is good. They did all the scoring, and it was more than enough.

Good win against a team they were supposed to beat. Detroit is now 17-6-5 on the season and currently tied with Tampa Bay for number one in the Atlantic Division. Look out, Eastern Conference. We’re here, and we’re not stopping. Oh, also.. Detroit has won 8 of their last 10 games. Pretty good.
