Red Wings Acquire David Perron from Sens

On the eve of the NHL’s trade deadline, Steve Yzerman made his first move to bolster his team. David Perron, a familiar face, is returning to Detroit from Ottawa for a conditional draft pick.

Perron suited up for the Red Wings in 158 games between 2022 and 2024. The now 37-year-old posted 103 points (41-62–103), and was a steady leader for a rebuilding team at the time. The kicker in this trade really hinges on Perron’s health. Ottawa will only get a 2026 fourth-round pick if he plays a game in the regular season or during the playoffs. Perron has not played since January 20.

Here are some additional details on the conditions of the trade, per Chris Johnston.

Best case scenario, Perron can play for Detroit. He’ll be an immediate contributor and bring back some of that nice veteran sandpaper that is needed this time of year. Worst case scenario, well, I suppose there isn’t one. If he doesn’t play, this costs you precisely nothing. BUT, you did acquire a valuable voice and influence in the locker room.

The NHL trade deadline is set for 3:00 PM ET on Friday, March 6.
