Steve Yzerman said he wanted to shore up his goaltending in the offseason. He got that started on day two of the 2025 NHL Draft by trading Petr Mrazek and a couple of draft picks, per Elliotte Friedman.
The Red Wings made the trade official at 1:00 PM ET. It’s Gibson for Mrazek, a 2027 2nd round pick and a 2026 4th round pick.
Gibson, who is 31 years old, is in year seven of eight of his current deal with a cap hit of $6.4 million. Detroit would be shedding $4.25 million by moving Mrazek’s contract.
I don’t hate the trade at all, personally. Future picks, none of them 1st rounders, you exchange a goalie for one that is better without big cap implications. Gibson is no spring chicken, and there are certainly some questions surrounding his durability, but it seems low-risk high-reward.
