Red Wings Assign Evgeny Svechnikov to Cape Breton

DETROIT — The Red Wings have assigned 2015 1st round pick Evgeny Svechnikov to his junior team in Cape Breton.

After an impressive outing during the prospects tournament, and main camp, the newest Russian Red Wing is on his way back to his junior team, cutting the roster down to 56 players. Svechnikov posted 78 points in 56 games in his rookie QMJHL campaign, and looks to be an impact player for Cape Breton yet again in 2015-2016.

Personally, I would have liked to see Geno in a couple more preseason games, as I feel he has all the tools to be a pro hockey player right now, but the Red Wings are certainly in no rush with him. He’ll have time to develop in the junior leagues before making his jump. I anticipate his entry level contract will come sometime within the next eight months.

More from the Red Wings organization:

The Detroit Red Wings today assigned forward Evgeny Svechnikov to the QMJHL’s Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, reducing the team’s preseason roster to 56 players: 33 forwards, 18 defenseman and five goaltenders.

The Red Wings host the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight at 7:30 p.m. (FOX Sports Detroit/97.1 The Ticket), wrapping up a set of three games in three days. Detroit will also play preseason home games against Boston on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. and next Friday (Oct. 2) against Toronto at 7:30 p.m.
