The Red Wings announced Monday that restricted free agent defenseman Albert Johansson and forward Jonatan Berggren have signed new extensions. Johansson, who had a fabulous rookie season, earned himself a two-year deal with $1.125 AAV. Berggren is back on a one-year contract paying him $1.825 million.
Albert Johansson was a stud for the Red Wings when they needed him most this past season. He pretty much solidified himself as “part of the bigger picture” for this team with his tenacity and offensive flare. He gets a nice pay raise, and if he continues to ascend, the Red Wings will again reward him.
Jonatan Berggren on the other hand, he’s been around for a minute and (for lack of better words) has floated around. He has shown the ability to be a playmaker, but hasn’t sustained it in a way that has earned him big minutes. This is one of those “show me” deals that is fair to both the player and the team. I’m rooting for him. Honestly.
Steve Yzerman still has to get a deal done with Elmer Soderblom. No concern there. A deal will get done one way or another.
