Red Wings Can’t Overcome Bad Start, Lose to Coyotes

The Red Wings are coming off a few disappointing games where goals have been few and far in between. They have a good chance against a bad Arizona team that suffered a 7-0 loss in Pittsburgh last night.

First Period

Zetterberg was a game time decision but to everyone’s relief he was able to play and took the first face-off of the game.

Wings get a penalty almost right off the bat and pay the price for it as DeAngelo beats Howard short side. Well…that didn’t take long.

🙁

Wings go on the power play and we get to see one of the worst PPs in the league against the worst PK in the league. The Wings quickly relinquished a 2 on 1 and failed to generate many changed. Before the PP could end, Kronwall got a penalty for tripping and sent Arizona to a power play.

The Red Wings didn’t generate a shot on goal until 14:27 into the period. After almost an entire period of futility, AA got a lucky goal which bounced off his skate.

Whatever, we’ll take it.

With less than 30 seconds left the Red Wings gave up an absolutely brutal goal that went through Howard’s glove arm.

Score: 2-1 ARI

Shots: 6-7 DET

Second Period

The Red Wings started the period off much better but it didn’t take long for them to get into trouble. Brian Lashoff failed to clear the puck from his own zone and the Wings left Howard to deal with two Coyotes in front of the net, resulting in a goal by Jamie McGinn.

After some chirping and chipping at each other Anthony Mantha and Luke Schenn dropped the gloves. Mantha got some good punches in before the refs stepped in.

The Wings had a lot energy this period, they rushed the net a lot more and had some good chances. Unfortunately, their efforts were not rewarded. Their power play was abysmal at 0/3 and they couldn’t generate any chances or get organized whatsoever with the man-advantage.

Score: 3-1 ARI

Shots: 20-15 DET

Third Period

Detroit started the period off with intensity again, outshot Arizona by a wide margin, but had trouble solving Mike Smith.

Blashill decided to roll with 3 lines and somehow Mantha didn’t make the cut.

Uhhhh…what?

He was moved down to the fourth line to play with Ott and Jurco and gave that line some immediate spark as Jurco had probably the best chance of the period. He deked Smith out of position but couldn’t tuck the puck in.

At the halfway mark the Wings coughed up the puck in their own zone and McGinn made them pay for it, again. Although they had better chances and better play overall, Arizona made them pay for every mistake.

Summary

The Red Wings fail to score again and lose their third in a row. To add insult to injury, they also lost Marchenko to an upper body injury.
