Red Wings Claim Martin Frk Off Waivers

The Detroit Red Wings looked to right a wrong today by reclaiming Martin Frk off waivers from the Carolina Hurricanes.

The CBA has a nice little quirk that allowed the Wings to send Frk down to Grand Rapids without once again placing him on waivers:

13.22 When a Club claims a Player on Regular or Unconditional Waivers, and, subsequently, in the same season it requests Waivers on the same Player and the original owning Club is the successful and only Club making a Waiver claim, then the original owning Club shall be entitled to Loan such Player to a club in another league within thirty days without further Waivers being asked; provided that such Player has not participated in ten or more NHL Games (cumulative) and remained on an NHL roster more than thirty days (cumulative) following such successful claim.

Frk was previously waived by the Red Wings before the start of the season despite having a decent preseason. 3 teams put a claim in for him, and there was concern that the Wings had erred in not allowing Frk to showcase his talent at the NHL level before he required waivers. However, in 2 games for the Hurricanes he failed to register a single point while playing limited minutes, leading Carolina to place him on waivers themselves.

Frk will likely report to Grand Rapids in the next day or two, and the Wings will get more opportunity to evaluate him and determine where he fits within the organizational depth chart among forwards. For the Red Wings, they may earn a little bit of redemption in reacquiring a player that has some untapped potential for nothing.
