Red Wings to be well-represented at 2023 Worlds

The 2023 IIHF Men’s World Championship is just around the corner – the annual tournament is scheduled for May 12-28 with Finland and Latvia the hosts. The Red Wings are going to have a handful of players and coaches participating, but some of the biggest names on Detroit’s roster are opting to stay home and focus on next season.

Head coach Derek Lalonde is headed to the Worlds with Team USA as an assistant coach. Meanwhile, Steve Yzerman and Alex Tanguay will be with Team Canada as associate GM and assistant coach, respectively.

As for the players – we know that Moritz Seider, Dylan Larkin and Ville Husso will be skipping the tournament this year. Makes sense.. The three of them played a ton of hockey – especially Seider. Rosters haven’t been made official, so keep that in mind.. I guess a lot could change between now and the deadline for teams to have rosters submitted.

  • Dominik Kubalik – Team Czechia
Kubalik has been to Worlds before. He had a pretty good first season with the Wings and played a major role in secondary scoring. 20 goals and 25 assists and he only missed one game.
  • Lucas Raymond – Team Sweden
I’m not gonna say that Raymond had a ‘sophomore slump.’ I think his game showed improvement in a lot of areas but the injuries weighed him down. If he had suited up for all 82 games like he did his rookie season, he’s a back-to-back 20-goal scorer.
  • Jonatan Berggren – Team Sweden
I am so excited for Berggren (and Raymond) to get this opportunity. If you watched the Wings this season, you already know what kind of player Berggren is. He’s a crafty playmaker with an underrated touch for scoring goals. Not sure how much ice time he will get, but SWE would be wise to utilize him.
  • Olli Määttä – Team Finland
Fresh off of a strong season and a new contract extension – a new fan favorite will get the chance to represent his homeland in his actual homeland. He was a pleasant surprise for me this season and I’m glad the Wings got him for a couple more years at a reasonable price. Well-deserved year for Määttä.
  • Joe Veleno – Team Canada
Veleno has established himself as a strong bottom-six player in Detroit. And even better – he just turned 23 in January. I think he has a lot of space to grow and develop. Getting the opportunity to play in the Worlds can only help him.
  • Jake Walman – Team USA or Canada
Another defenseman who absolutely deserves this. Walman is the second-best defenseman the Wings have in my eyes. He’s a stud and I’m sure both USA and Canada want him on their roster. Walman has a duel citizenship. We probably won’t find out which team he’s going with until rosters are announced.

Teams have to submit a preliminary list no later than two weeks before the 2023 IIHF Mean’s World Championship. So we’ll know more about who’s going and where in the coming weeks. The tournament will drop the puck May 12 with four games – including FIN vs. USA and SWE vs. GER. You can find the full schedule below.
