Red Wings Game Analysis, After-Action Report for Saturday March 14th: Detroit Red Wings 2 – Philadelphia Flyers 7

Hey the Wings lost 7-2.

Box Score Here

This game was the referees’ fault because they didn’t just call the fight after 40 minutes. Philly was 3/4 on the power play and Detroit 1/3. 36-33 shot advantage for the Flyers

In goal, things were bad. Outside of goal, things were bad.

Guide to plus/minus adjustments

The Goals

[short-version write-ups on this one]

1st Period 05:22 – Philadelphia Goal (PP): Wayne Simmonds (tip in) from Brayden Schenn and Mark Streit
Philly opens up the scoring on the power play with a shot from the top that gets through as past a screened Howard. Glendening a half-minus for losing the faceoff and Miller a half-minus for chasing too low on Schenn and losing the angle to block the lane.

1st Period 17:07 – Philadelphia Goal: Nicklas Grossmann (wrist shot) from Sean Couturier and Wayne Simmonds
Detroit screws up another defensive play and Grossmann gets a break in on net that he finishes. Quincey, Zetterberg, and Abdelkader cleared. Cole gets an extra minus for not covering back on DeKeyser coming across. This is a known play in the Wings’ defensive scheme.

2nd Period 04:14 – Detroit Goal: Justin Abdelkader (backhand) from Henrik Zetterberg and Danny DeKeyser
The Wings get some life in the 2nd as Hank springs Abdelkader for a breakaway that he finishes for his 19th of the season by sliding it through Mason’s 5-hole. No adjustment here. There’s absolutely zero reason for Grossmann to have lost track of Abdelkader.

2nd Period 13:39 – Philadelphia Goal (PP): Brayden Schenn (backhand) from Wayne Simmonds and Claude Giroux
Detroit can’t clear the front of their net on a shot from above the dot and Schenn finishes a loose puck. after Simmonds gets the first opportunity to jam on the puck. Half-minus to Quincey, DeKeyser, and Glendening. There’s too much standing around giving up important space by all three on this play.

3rd Period 00:11 – Philadelphia Goal: Brayden Schenn (wrist shot) from Jakub Voracek
Just 11 seconds into the third period, Schenn gets his hat trick goal as Voracek makes Kronwall look stupid and Schenn gets wide open for a tap-in. Tatar will be cleared here as he’s up ice while the Flyers score 2-on-3. Kronwall gets a minus for the turnover and a half-minus for letting Voracek pass to Schenn. Smith gets a half-minus for not clearing Voracek. Sheahan and Datsyuk keep their minuses (Sheahan was in the area of Schenn and Datsyuk lost the period-opening faceoff).

3rd Period 08:22 – Philadelphia Goal: Super-Frenchname Bellemare (slap shot) from Zac Rinaldo and Vincent Lecavalier
Kyle Quincey plays like the Kyle Quincey of old and Bellemare takes advantage of a good pass for a one-timer. Ericsson and Pulkkinen will be cleared (Riggy is playing his man at the net-front like he should be, Pulkkinen is caught trying to create transition on the turnover). Andersson’s minus will be halved. The pass from Quincey to him is never a good idea. Nyquist will get a minus for leaving Bellemare alone when he should be getting back to cover him. Quincey will get a minus and a half on this egregiously-bad turnover.

3rd Period 10:57 – Detroit Goal (PP): Erik Cole (tip-in) from Marek Zidlicky and Pavel Datsyuk
Cole gets his first as a Red Wing with a tip-in from the doorstep late on the power play after Zidlicky walks it across the blue line and floats a wrister into traffic. No adjustment.

3rd Period 16:40 – Philadelphia Goal (PP): Matt Read (redirect) from Andrew MacDonald and Carlo Colaiacovo
Matt Read-irects a shot-pass from MacDonald to the back door as he crosses the net. This one is on Smith, who is chasing too far to the sides on this entire shift and never gets back to his net-front position. If Smith is above the crease where he should be, this pass doesn’t connect. Smith gets a minus.

3rd Period 17:18 – Philadelphia Goal: Zac Rinaldo (who cares) from Ryan White and Michael Raffl
Fuck you. Smith gets a turnover minus for giving it straight to Raffle in the neutral zone to start a rush the other way and then another minus for stepping up to challenge Raffl at the blue line instead of backing up and helping his teammates. DeKeyser keeps his minus for letting the Raffl pass through him. Andersson, Pulkkinen, and Nyquist all cleared.

The Penalties

1st Period 05:10 – Justin Abdelkader (hooking) against Sean Couturier: Abby loses a position battle in the offensive zone and gets his stick up into Couturier’s midsection, heading to the box for it. Minus for Abdelkader.

1st Period 06:30 – Niklas Kronwall (high sticking) against Claude Giroux: Detroit goes shorthanded again as Kronwall loses control of his lumber and gets a high sticking penalty. Minus for Kronwall.

2nd Period 09:33 – Wayne Simmonds (hooking) against Danny DeKeyser: Detroit fails to get out of their own zone, but get a break when Simmonds hooks DeKeyser down on a race to a loose puck. Since it’s not DK’s fault the clear got screwed up and he got himself into good position, DeKeyser will get a plus.

2nd Period 13:02 – Pavel Datsyuk (tripping) against Claude Giroux: Detroit goes shorthanded as Datsyuk hands the puck away at center ice and ten trips Giroux on the ensuing scoring chance. Minus for Datsyuk.

3rd Period 09:14 – Nicklas Grossmann (slashing) against Stephen Weiss: Broken stick slash = penalty. No adjustment.

3rd Period 12:45 – Wayne Simmonds (Overactive alligator brain) against the whole Red Wings team: Abdelkader and Schultz disagree about something and Wayne Simmonds goes insane, getting himself thrown out of the game in the process. No adjustment.

3rd Period 15:19 – Danny DeKeyser (hooking) against Brayden Schenn: Philly gets another good scoring chance that just misses and the Wings’ defense heads back to the box for groping around in the dark like a blind man at an orgy. Minus for DeKeyser.

The depth lines hurt the Wings, as did their defense. Despite the top line’s positive possession numbers, they’re not doing enough to get results.

The previous sentence rings truer as the offensive zone starts point to them getting an easier path to drive results.
