In a somewhat confusing fashion, the NHL revealed it’s lottery picks for the 2025 Draft live on ESPN this evening. The Red Wings will have the 13th pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.

The odds were not in Detroit’s favor, obviously. Here were their chances via Tankathon:

Pick no. 2: 5.1% chance
Pick no. 3: 0.1% chance
Pick no. 4: 0.1% chance
Pick no. 12: 85.7% chance
Pick no. 13: 8.9% chance
Pick no. 14: 0.2% chance

Detroit basically had zero chance at getting pick no. 1. That being said, here’s how the picks will go for the NHL’s basement-dwellers, and big shoutout to PuckPedia for doing some visual work for us. Included links following:

  1. New York Islanders (+9)
  2. San Jose Sharks (-1)
  3. Chicago Blackhawks(-1)
  4. Utah (+10)
  5. Nashville Predators (-2)
  6. Philadelphia Flyers (-2)
  7. Boston Bruins (-2)
  8. Seattle Kraken (-2)
  9. Buffalo Sabres (-2)
  10. Anaheim Ducks (-2)
  11. Pittsburgh Penguins (-2)
  12. Pittsburgh Penguins via NYR (-1)
  13. Detroit Red Wings (-1)
  14. Columbus Blue Jackets (-1)
  15. Vancouver Canucks
  16. Montreal Canadiens via Calgary

We can talk about the hideoUtahus broadcast that ESPN rolled out for its airtime at 7:00 PM ET later. The results are what they are. Detroit had the best odds at 12th but instead fell back one. Unfortunate but totally predicatble outcome, sadly. However, I’m not going to get hung up on pick 13 vs pick 12. I just want that half-hour of my life back.

The biggest winners are the Islanders and a team that doesn’t have a name yet. Big night for the NHL to kickoff its second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
