You will get three more years of Ben Chiarot, and you are gonna like it!!!!
The Red Wings announced a somewhat unexpected contract extension Tuesday morning. Defenseman Ben Chiarot is staying put in Detroit after signing a three-year deal that carries a $3.85 million cap hit. The new deal expires in 2029, when Chiarot is 38 years old.
I say the deal was somewhat unexpected because I figured Steve Yzerman would try and bring Chiarot back, but didn’t see it happening mid-season.
Chiarot signed in Detroit back inn July of 2022. That was a four-year deal that carried a cap hit of $4.75 million. So, a nice little discount for a battle-tested veteran that has plenty of hockey left in him. I don’t believe his new deal carries any clauses, but we’ll have to wait and see about that.
It’s hard to hate this news. Chiarot has carved out an important role for the Wings. He’s not a star, but you’re not paying him to be. The advanced metrics aren’t very kind to him, but Chiarot is a fine piece for the bottom pairings.
