Red Wings Inch Closer to Final Roster

These cuts are coming in quick, folks. The Red Wings announced Friday that three players have been assigned to Grand Rapids, bringing the roster down to 25. Forward Carter Mazur, defenseman William Wallinder, and goaltender Michal Postava will start the regular season in the AHL with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Here is the current preseason roster as of early Friday afternoon:

My eyes aren’t the best, but I see three rookies on that roster. One of Emmitt Finnie, Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, or Axel Sandin-Pellikka could be suiting up on opening night. Hell, you could argue that maybe more than one of them are sticking around. Steve Yzerman has plenty of veteran depth. Players like Travis Hamonic or Justin Holl could easily be moved to facilitate a true injection of young talent into this Red Wings roster.

Here’s a look at what head coach Todd McLellan is looking at today’s practice, per Max Bultman:

The last preseason game is tomorrow night and the regular season starts just days after. The final roster will be carved out in no time. I’m guessing Emmitt Finnie has made the team. I have also been wrong on just about every roster prediction I have made. We are so back.

Another cool piece of news this afternoon: The Detroit News’ Tony Paul reported that FanDuel Sports Network says Trevor Thompson will contribute on broadcasts this season.
