Red Wings moms see 1-4 gettable game in loss to Dallas

It’s the beginning of the Corey Perry suspension era!  The Wings have their moms in town to watch them take on a Dallas team that’s at least 40% cleaner than usual looking to build off a win.

The pregame made sure to mention the Wings took the moms to Dealey Plaza… and we thought that with Perry out, there would be no mention of headshots.

First Period

Abdelkader-Ehn-Erne starts us off because it’s a road game and Jeff Blashill loves doing that.   They manage to skate around and not give up a goal so it’s a win. The first good Wings chance comes a few minutes in on a Zadina rush and feed to Filppula for a shot. The second good chance comes a minute later and it’s a goal! Robby Fabbri breaks in on a good transition play. A feed to the middle bounces off Heiskanen’s skate and right to Larkin in the slot to make it 1-0 Wings.

The Wings came out of the goal with good momentum too. I liked the next shift by Givani Smith pushing up the boards in the neutral zone and then winning a battle behind the net.

Bowey got high-sticked by Faksa and the Wings get a four-minute power play at 7:28. The Stars’ PK goes very aggressive against the top unit and passive against the 2nd unit and I cannot figure out why but it works exceptionally.  As the 2nd half of the minor wanes, Dallas gets a 2-on-0 rush on a neutral zone turnover and Roope Hintz makes it 1-1.

To make things better, Detroit follows this up by taking a too many men penalty, giving the Stars their first PP. Detroit’s PK gets a big scare at 90 seconds; Bernier has a puck get behind him but it never crosses the line and Bowey is able to clear it out of the crease and kill the remainder. We wait another minute to hear if the arena horn is going to ruin things and fortunately it doesn’t.

Fabbri gets a prime chance from the slot stopped by Khudobin shortly after.  Nothing doing for a few minutes after until Lashoff takes a slashing penalty on Pavelski at the side of the net. Nothing quite as exciting on this power play as the last one, but the penalty expires and we’re back to evens. The final seconds tick off and we go rest.

The Score: 1-1
The Shots: 9-9
Standout Players:  Robby Fabbri, Givani Smith
The Period All Summed Up: Tyler Bertuzzi’s mom burned him.

Second Period

Detroit makes it a WHOLE MINUTE into the period before taking their first penalty of the second period. Bowey gets skates around and ends up holding Hintz. This PP takes just 22 seconds before a Lindell shot hits Faksa’s stick on its way to finding twine to make it 2-1 Stars.

The Wings come out with a blender line that creates a scoring chance for Glendening followed by an offensive zone penalty by Radulov for hooking Hronek to give Detroit another shot at a power play. This time they manage to avoid giving up a shorty so that’s another win.

Glendening gets tripped by Pavelski in the Stars zone on the follow-up and again it’s a power play!  The aggressive PK keeps the Wings from getting any chances on this one either. The moms are disappointed.

Things bounce back and forth for a while with not much going on until Joe Pavelski makes it 3-1 Stars on a Bowey turnover at center ice.

The Wings answer with their fourth line and it actually creates some offensive pressure (but no goal). This momentum quickly evaporates and the Stars get the next few chances. Bertuzzi does get a rush, but he passes it to nobody on the zone entry.

Bernier made a huge stop with just over two to go on another Stars odd-man rush as Trevor Thompson is talking to Madison Bowey’s mom wearing very stylish glasses and is easily the most-interesting thing going on in the last ten minutes.

The Score: 3-1 Stars
The Shots: 20-18 Stars (11-9)
Standout Players: Glendening
The Period All Summed Up: It was a second period. You know how these go.

Third Period

Oh god I just want this game to be over. Just two more Stars goals to go!

Four minutes into the third before we get a whistle and the Wings have the only shot on goal.

Just after the icing call that got the whistle, the Stars jam their fourth goal into the net. Hintz tips a shot on net and Pavelski cleans it up before Bernier can cover. Blashil challenges for goaltender interference, as Pavelski slid into the goalie to push him away from the puck he was trying to cover. Blashill is right and we go on at 3-1.

Ok all the moms are great in this broadcast, but Mitzie Smith (Givani’s aunt) is BY FAR my favorite.

Bernier takes a penalty tripping Jamie Benn to prevent a goal after getting deked out of his pants. The Wings kill this one off with nothing interesting happening outside of Lashoff and Pavelski getting mad at each other in front of the crease.

Mike Green has Jonathan Ericsson syndrome and is unable to keep the puck in the offensive zone for what is unofficially the eighteenth time in this game.

Blashill somehow falls asleep and forgets to pull Bernier until more than 16:30 has elapsed. Dallas’ Roman Polak takes a delay of game with 3:15 remaining to give the Wings a two-man advantage. Despite all their best efforts, the Wings aren’t able to prevent the empty-net shorty and it’s 4-1 Dallas.  Sekera from the point.

Final Score: 4-1 Stars
The Shots: 26-23 Stars Wings (6-5)
Standout Players: Mitzie Smith
The Period All Summed Up: This game was boring.
