The Detroit Red Wings have made it official — Jackson native Carter Mazur is on his way from Grand Rapids to Detroit to make his NHL debut. The 22-year-old winger was a third-round pick for Steve Yzerman in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. To make room for Mazur on the roster, Detroit placed forward Christian Fischer on waivers yesterday. We’ll learn if he cleared waivers later this afternoon.
We had a bit of heads up on this move — some family members of Mazur posted on social media that he was getting the call-up, so it was just a matter of time until the team made it official.
Mazur had missed some time with the Griffins this season due to injury. He returned to action in January and has been on a tear ever since — seven goals and four assists in 11 games played. This guy plays a “buzzsaw” style of hockey and isn’t afraid to get physical or go to the dirty areas. He’ll fit into the Red Wings plans quite nicely, and I reckon it won’t be love before he emerges as a fan favorite.
The Red Wings are slated to host the Utah Hockey Club at Little Caesars Arena tonight at 7:00 PM ET. Mazur is expected to suit up and make his NHL debut, with family and friends in attendance.
